South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has addressed the public for the first time following his declaration of martial law, which was lifted after 6 hours.
In a televised speech, Yoon said he declared martial law out of desperation as president, adding, "However, this decision caused anxiety and discomfort among the public." Emphasizing that he felt "deep regret" over what happened, Yoon stated, "I sincerely apologize for causing the public to feel anxious."
"THERE WILL BE NO SECOND MARTIAL LAW"
Declaring that he is ready to take responsibility for his decision, Yoon said, "I will not evade any legal or political responsibility regarding the martial law decision."
Addressing rumors that a second martial law would be declared, Yoon said, "There will never be a second martial law." Noting that he would entrust the task of stabilizing the country's future, including his own term in office, to the People Power Party (PPP), Yoon concluded his speech with the words, "I apologize once again for the anxiety I have caused our people."
It was noted that Yoon made his first speech following the martial law decision, which triggered a political crisis, just before the "impeachment" vote to be held in the National Assembly today.
