South Korean President Yoon released: Prosecution did not exercise right to appeal

President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on December 3, alleging that the opposition was engaged in anti-state activities, which led the National Assembly to initiate an impeachment process against him. Yoon, who was arrested and taken for questioning on January 15, became the first South Korean president to be arrested before the impeachment process was completed.

The Seoul Central District Court accepted Yoon's appeal against his detention yesterday. The prosecution did not object to the court's decision and issued instructions for Yoon's release. Following the decision, Yoon was released from the detention center where he was being held.

Yoon, who regained his freedom after 52 days, arrived at his official residence in the Hannam-dong district of Seoul at approximately 18:15 local time. After briefly greeting the supporters waiting for him there, he entered his residence.

In a written statement issued through his legal team after his release, Yoon said, "I am grateful for the courage and determination of the Seoul Central District Court in correcting this illegal situation."

Addressing his supporters, Yoon said, "I express my deepest gratitude to the citizens and the younger generations who stood by me despite the cold weather." Yoon thanked the ruling People Power Party and everyone who supported him.

It has been reported that the Constitutional Court will deliver its final decision on whether Yoon will be removed from office later this month. Yoon's political future will depend on the court's ruling.
