WHAT HAPPENED?
A new motion submitted to parliament by opposition parties to impeach South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his declaration of martial law on December 3 was voted on today. According to Yonhap, lawmakers were set to gather at the National Assembly today for the session where the motion would be discussed.
A new motion had been submitted to parliament for the president's impeachment on the grounds that President Yoon's declaration of martial law was unconstitutional and illegal. However, members of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) had left the session before the vote, which had prevented the vote from taking place.
'HE HAD ISSUED ARREST ORDERS'
The motion stated that the short-lived declaration of martial law on December 3 'violated the constitution and the laws' and therefore the President should be removed from office. Allegations that President Yoon had issued orders to martial law troops and police to arrest lawmakers following the declaration of martial law were also included in the new motion.
For the motion to be accepted, a favorable vote from 200 lawmakers, representing two-thirds of the total number of members in parliament, is required. The opposition bloc, which holds 192 of the 300 seats in the National Assembly, needs the support of at least 8 lawmakers from the ruling PPP to achieve the qualified majority.
