South Korea's new President has been determined

In the early presidential election held following the martial law crisis that resulted in the removal of President Yoon Suk Yeol from office in South Korea, approximately 98.88 percent of the votes have been counted.

According to unofficial results, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lee Jae-myung has won the right to become the country's new President, receiving approximately 49.29 percent of the vote. The ruling People Power Party (PPP) candidate Kim Moon-soo received 41.34 percent of the vote.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol had declared martial law on December 3, alleging that "the opposition was engaged in anti-state activities." The National Assembly, claiming that the martial law was unlawful, initiated an impeachment process against Yoon. Yoon, whose powers were suspended and who remained in detention for 52 days, was later released. Yoon was officially removed from office after the Constitutional Court of South Korea upheld the impeachment decision made by the National Assembly.

THE COUNTRY HAD GONE TO EARLY ELECTIONS

In accordance with the law requiring early elections to be held within 60 days at the latest in the event of a president's removal from office, South Korea had set June 3 as the election date. 44.39 million voters began casting their ballots today at 14,295 polling stations that opened at 06:00 local time. Vote counting began after the polls closed at 20:00 local time.
