Spain officially recognizes the State of Palestine

Spain has officially recognized the State of Palestine.

Holding a press conference, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez stated, "Spain recognizes a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, encompassing the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. We will not recognize any changes to the 1967 borders."

"OUR DECISION IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL LAW"

Emphasizing that this decision is in accordance with international law, Sánchez stated that they would focus on a two-state solution and said:

"Our priority is to put an end to what is happening in Gaza and to open crossings for humanitarian aid; from now on, we will focus our efforts on a two-state solution. Our decision today to recognize Palestine is in accordance with international law, and we will work with Arab countries to organize a peace conference.''

The Spanish Parliament had previously passed a resolution in November 2014 calling for the recognition of the State of Palestine.

NUMBER OF COUNTRIES RECOGNIZING PALESTINE WILL REACH 146

Norway and Ireland had also previously announced that they would recognize the State of Palestine on May 28.

With this, the number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine will rise to 146.

Iceland was the first Western European country to recognize Palestine, and Sweden was the first EU member state to do so.
