Spain: We will recognize the Palestinian state even without EU support

Reiterating his view that ending the conflict between Israel and Hamas depends on a two-state solution, Prime Minister Sanchez expressed that the Palestinian state must be recognized beforehand for the international peace conference initiative led by Spain to take place.

EMPHASIS ON EFFORTS FOR RECOGNITION OF PALESTINE

Reminding that more than 130 countries already recognize the Palestinian state, while the US and some EU countries have not yet done so, Sanchez stated that it is worth the effort to make initiatives within the EU for the recognition of Palestine, and that if this does not materialize, Spain's inclination to recognize Palestine continues.

Sanchez called on other EU leaders not to apply "double standards," asking the EU to show the same stance against Israel regarding its attacks on Gaza and humanitarian issues as it has shown against Russia in the Ukraine war.

CRITICISM OF EUROPE'S POLICIES

The Spanish Prime Minister said that if the EU remains silent in the face of Israel's human rights violations and its occupations in Gaza and the West Bank, it will face the risk of being isolated in the international community, and that Europe needs to review its policies.

Noting that the problem between Israel and Palestine can be overcome with a solution based on two states, Sanchez expressed that solving this problem is in Europe's interest from both a moral and geopolitical perspective.
