Starlink banned in Iran

Iran has officially banned the use of Starlink satellites, owned by Elon Musk, in the country as part of efforts to bring internet access under strict control. The new law, approved by the Iranian Parliament, targets not only unauthorized internet systems but also activities conducted in favor of "hostile countries," particularly Israel.

ESPIONAGE WITH ISRAEL

According to the 9-article bill passed in parliament, intelligence, espionage, and operational activities carried out on behalf of Israel, the US, and other "hostile states" will be evaluated under the scope of "corruption on earth," which is among the most serious crimes in the Iranian Penal Code. The penalty for this crime includes severe sanctions that can extend to the death penalty.

SENDING CONTENT TO FOREIGN MEDIA IS ALSO A CRIME

The law also directly concerns digital content creators. Individuals who produce or share content that could undermine national security, create fear and panic in society, or fuel social division, and those who transmit such footage or information to "hostile media outlets," could face prison sentences ranging from 2 to 5 years. Furthermore, these individuals will be banned from public office for life.

CYBERSECURITY AND INFORMATION CONTROL TO INCREASE

The new regulation aims to make Iran's cybersecurity policy more closed and centralized. Satellite systems like Starlink are viewed as a threat because they offer internet access that bypasses government control. In this context, inspections are expected to be increased to detect devices that enter the country without authorization.
