State of emergency declared in Ecuador after two mayors killed in two days
In the South American country of Ecuador, two mayors have lost their lives in armed attacks over the last two days. In response to the situation, a state of emergency has been declared by order of President Daniel Noboa.
In Ecuador, the Mayor of Camilo Ponce Enriquez in the Azuay province was killed in an armed attack on April 17.
Following this, the killing of Jorge Maldonado, the Mayor of Portovelo in the El Oro province, further escalated tensions and led to the declaration of a state of emergency.
It was noted that the state of emergency was declared by order of President Daniel Noboa, citing attacks on power plants and critical infrastructure facilities.
DAILY POWER CUTS BETWEEN 2 AND 5 HOURS
In addition to the attacks on power plants, Colombia's decision to halt electricity exports to Ecuador has increased daily power outages in the country to 8 hours.
It was stated that the drought experienced this year has further deepened the energy crisis.
On average, there are power cuts lasting between 2 and 5 hours every day.
Energy companies in Ecuador had also shared information with the public regarding the scheduled hours for power cuts in many cities, including the capital, Quito.
In a statement made by the Ministry of Energy on April 17, it was noted that conditions such as rising temperatures, decreasing water flow rates, and drought have affected the country's energy system.
