Statement from survivor of plane crash in India: 'There were many lifeless bodies'

Following the crash of an Air India passenger plane carrying 242 people, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London, into a university hostel seconds after takeoff in India, 40-year-old survivor Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was filmed walking to an ambulance with a paramedic.

In footage recorded by bystanders, Ramesh was seen with wounds on his face, walking with a limp toward the ambulance.

According to reports in the Indian press, Ramesh, who holds dual citizenship in the UK and India, was on the plane to return to the UK after a visit to India and was seated in seat 11A, located between the front and middle sections of the aircraft.

"SOMEONE TOOK ME TO AN AMBULANCE"

In an interview with the Indian press, Ramesh stated, "When I opened my eyes, there were many lifeless bodies around me. I was scared. I stood up and started running. There was wreckage everywhere. Someone took me toward an ambulance and I was taken to the hospital." Ramesh, whose brother was also on the same flight, said, "I cannot find my brother anywhere. Please help me find him."

Indian Police stated in a press release that Ramesh's treatment is ongoing and that they expect the death toll to rise due to the plane crashing into a residential area. While the cause of the crash is not yet known, possibilities such as an engine failure, a similar mechanical issue, or a bird strike are being investigated.

DEATH TOLL EXCEEDS 290

Indian police announced that approximately 294 people lost their lives in the plane crash that occurred shortly after takeoff from the city of Ahmedabad and hit a residential area.

The death toll has risen in the accident where an Air India passenger plane carrying 242 passengers, en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed into a university hostel where medical students were staying seconds after takeoff. Authorities in Ahmedabad announced that the death toll has exceeded 290, and more than 50 people are injured and continuing their treatment in the hospital.

Indian police official Vidhi Chaudhary said in a press statement, "Approximately 294 people have lost their lives. This number includes students who were staying in the building where the plane crashed."

Earlier in the day, Swapnil Bhalodia from the Indian Medical Association's Medical Students Network had stated that at least 3 students lost their lives in the crash and 30 students were injured.
