Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the TRNC and the UN Peacekeeping Force

In the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was noted: "The United Nations Security Council has extended the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force stationed on the Island of Cyprus for another year with Resolution 2771, adopted on January 31, 2025. We support the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) regarding the aforementioned decision."

"WE EMPHASIZE THAT IT IS ESSENTIAL"

In the statement, which emphasized the importance of establishing a legal basis for the continuation of the UN Peacekeeping Force's activities, it was stated: "While the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force was extended, the consent of the Turkish Cypriot side was once again not obtained, contrary to established UN practices. We remind that the activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force on TRNC territory can only be carried out within the framework of the goodwill of the TRNC authorities, and we emphasize that the urgent establishment of a legal basis for the continuation of these activities is essential. We underscore that we will provide full support to the steps the TRNC side will take in this context."

"A PERMANENT SOLUTION CAN BE FOUND ON THE BASIS OF REALITIES ON THE GROUND"

The statement, which emphasized that a permanent and sustainable solution on the Island of Cyprus can only be based on the realities on the ground, included the following: "On the other hand, we are deeply disappointed by the UN Security Council's insistence on referring to solution models that have expired and have fallen off the agenda in the context of a possible solution in this year's resolution extending the mandate of the Peacekeeping Force. A fair, permanent, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue can only be found on the basis of the realities on the ground. We call on the UN Security Council to acknowledge this reality and to register the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people, which are their inherent rights."
