Striking analysis from Greek media on the Israel-Hamas war: 'Poised to complicate matters'

Tensions in the region have been rising every day since the Al-Aqsa Flood operation launched by Hamas's armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, against Israel on the morning of October 7.

While Israel has increased its attacks on civilians in Gaza following its retaliatory operations against Hamas, the Greek media has claimed that the events in the region could lead to disagreements on the Ankara-Athens line.

According to a report in Sözcü; an analysis published in Kathimerini, one of Greece's most widely read newspapers, stated that this tension in the Middle East could blow cold winds between President Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who have recently taken positive steps. It was also recalled that the two leaders held a phone call last Monday and gave assurances that the events in the Middle East would not affect bilateral relations.

However, the analysis commented, “But their approaches to the events themselves have diverged. The only issue they agreed on was the need to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza. Apart from that, while Mitsotakis says that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people, Erdoğan's approach is completely different.”

The analysis also shared details of the approach taken by Greek officials. The analysis stated, “Greek officials estimate that following his efforts to mend relations with the West, Erdoğan is poised to complicate relations, and this time it may not be a temporary development but could become permanent. This situation could affect Turkey's relations with Washington, including the purchase of F-16 fighter jets and upgrade kits that are currently stalled in Congress.”
