Scientists have reported that, as a result of their research in the Mediterranean, they have found the highest-energy cosmic neutrino ever discovered, known as a 'ghost particle.' It was reported that the neutrino, detected using a special telescope called KM3NeT, has 30 times more energy than similar particles discovered previously.

Co-author of the study Rosa Coniglione stated that the ghost particle found with the KM3NeT telescope offers unique information about energetic events in the farthest corners of the universe.

Neutrinos are known as fundamental particles that do not interact directly with matter and provide the opportunity to study the most violent events in the universe. Brad K. Gibson, one of the co-authors of the KM3NeT Collaboration, explained that the energy of the discovered neutrino is equivalent to the energy released by the splitting of one billion uranium atoms.

Theoretical physicist Nicole Bell from the University of Melbourne emphasized that it is unlikely for such high-energy neutrinos to come from known sources, stating, 'This could be a sign of a new physical phenomenon or a process we do not yet understand.'

Scientists believe that the exact origin of the neutrino cannot be determined, but that it comes from beyond the Milky Way galaxy. This has brought extreme events such as supermassive black holes or collisions between cosmic rays and photons to the agenda.

Within the scope of the KM3NeT project, neutrino observations continue with detection units placed in the depths of the Mediterranean. Experts pointed out that this discovery is an important step toward shedding light on the greatest unknowns of the universe.
