Suwayda city center in Syria falls under control of jihadists

Jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have been continuing their attacks against Assad forces in Syria since November 27.

Continuing their advance toward Damascus, the jihadist groups have also seized control of the Suwayda city center in southern Syria.

According to information obtained from local sources, local opposition groups in the southern province of Suwayda, where the majority of the population is Druze, have established control over the city center.

Opposition groups in Suwayda had demanded that the regime withdraw its forces from the entire province during negotiations with regime forces yesterday. The groups had given regime forces 24 hours to leave the city.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN SYRIA

Clashes between Assad forces and anti-regime jihadist groups began on November 27 in the western countryside of Aleppo province in northern Syria.

On November 30, jihadist groups led by HTS, which had captured most of Aleppo's city center from regime forces, established dominance over the entire Idlib region on the same day.

Following intense clashes, the groups took the Hama city center from regime forces on December 5.

The jihadist groups began advancing in the strategically important Homs province, which opens to the capital Damascus, by capturing several residential areas there.

Military opposition forces, which launched an operation on December 6 in the Daraa province on Syria's border with Jordan, recaptured the city center from the Assad administration following the clashes.

In the Dawn of Freedom Operation launched by the Syrian National Army against the terrorist organization PKK/YPG in the Aleppo countryside on December 1, the Tel Rifaat district center was liberated from terrorism.
