Taliban discusses allowing girls to attend school: 'It has no place in Islamic law'
The Taliban, which seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, has not allowed girls to attend school since that day. A high-ranking Taliban official has demanded reform in education, making statements arguing that the current situation is wrong.
Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai has called on the country's leaders to lift the bans imposed on women and girls receiving an education in Afghanistan.
Stanikzai made the remarks during a speech he delivered at a ceremony held at a religious school in the Khost region.
Stanikzai emphasized that 'just as there was no justification for this in the past and there should not have been, there is currently no reason for women and girls to be deprived of education,' and demanded that these bans be lifted.
In a post on his X account, Stanikzai stated that 'this ban, which covers nearly half of the population, has no place in Islamic law and is being implemented based on personal preferences,' writing, 'We once again call on the leadership to open the doors of education.'

TALIBAN HAD BANNED WOMEN FROM RECEIVING EDUCATION
With the Taliban coming to power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, severe restrictions were imposed on women working and girls receiving an education in the country.
Girls were first prevented from attending middle and high schools, and in December 2022, they were barred from universities. The employment of Afghan women in local and foreign non-governmental organizations was also suspended.
The Taliban, which also banned women's hair salons and beauty parlors across the country, had previously imposed bans on women entering public parks, entertainment venues, and gyms, as well as acting in television series and films.
