Tax to be imposed on gases emitted by farm animals
Denmark has announced that, as part of its climate change action plan, it will impose a tax on greenhouse gases emitted by farm animals starting in 2030 in an effort to reduce methane emissions.
Danish Minister for Taxation Jeppe Bruus announced that the government has reached an agreement with representatives of farmers, industry, and unions regarding the planned tax on gases emitted by cows, sheep, and pigs.
Noting that such a tax would be a "world first" once implemented, Bruus stated that Denmark aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030.
Under the taxation plan, starting in 2030, farmers engaged in livestock production will be taxed 300 kroner (43 dollars) per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The tax will rise to 750 kroner (108 dollars) by 2035.
The proposal regarding the taxation will be submitted to the Danish Parliament, the Folketing, towards the end of this year.
