Tennessee governor sends National Guard to Mexican border: Immigration crisis grows in the US

12PUNTO FOREIGN NEWS

In the US, Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee claimed that the federal government has failed to take action against the immigration crisis and has been unable to secure the borders. Lee announced that he has ordered the National Guard under his command to protect the Mexican border. The Tennessee National Guard is currently moving toward the border region.

Lee recently visited the National Guard troops stationed in the Eagle Pass area.

Following his visit, Lee made a statement on his X account, saying:

"As America faces the most severe border crisis in decades, TN is showing the rest of the country what it means to lead. Today, I joined TN National Guard members who will soon deploy on a voluntary mission to secure the Southern border as the federal government fails to act."

Despite Lee's deployment order, the National Guard will go to the border region on a voluntary basis rather than through a standard assignment, as it is outside their jurisdiction. The order issued by Lee ensures that in the event of any legal issues, the governor, rather than the National Guard, will be held responsible.

TEXAS GOVERNOR HAD ALSO SENT TROOPS

Previously, the state of Texas had also sent troops to the border, leading to a standoff between state-affiliated National Guard members and the US military. Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott defended his decision while accusing US President Biden and the Democrats of failing to take measures against the immigration crisis.

The US Border Patrol had announced that they encountered individuals attempting to cross the border more than 300,000 times in December alone.
