Tense hours in Texas

A tense standoff continues in the region between the National Guard, which takes orders directly from the Texas Governor, and federal military units.

While new crossing attempts are visible at the zero point near the Texas city of Eagle Pass, state border guards were observed continuing to reinforce the barbed wire they had placed on top of a wall made of shipping containers on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande River today.

Additionally, it was noted that patrol boats belonging to state forces have increased their patrol tours on the Rio Grande River, which forms the border between the two countries.

While reports continue to come in regarding irregular migrant crossings from rural parts of the state, the passage of irregular migrants into the U.S. appears to have stopped for now due to increased security measures in the Shelby Park area of Eagle Pass, the focal point of the controversy.

TENSION BETWEEN BIDEN AND THE TEXAS GOVERNOR

Texas Governor Greg Abbott had accused the Biden administration of failing to take sufficient measures regarding border security and ordered the installation of approximately 4 kilometers of barbed wire in the border region of Eagle Pass, which is frequently preferred by irregular migrants to enter the U.S.

The Biden administration also applied to the U.S. Supreme Court for the removal of the barbed wire, stating that border security falls under the authority of the federal government.

The Supreme Court ruled for the removal of the barbed wire installed along the Rio Grande River on the Mexican border, but the dispute between the Biden administration and Texas Governor Abbott escalated after he announced he would not comply with this decision.

Despite the court ruling, the Texas National Guard did not allow the U.S. Border Patrol to perform its duties on January 23 and continued to install barbed wire, while the governors of 25 Republican states also declared in a joint statement that they stand with Texas.
