Terrorist attack in Congo: 50 dead
At least 50 civilians have lost their lives in an attack by a rebel group against civilians in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to reports in the national press, members of the rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out an armed attack against civilians in the Beni region of North Kivu province in the east of the country.
At least 50 civilians lost their lives in the attack, during which many houses were looted and set on fire.
Security forces have launched an operation in the region following the attack.
The ADF, which began operating in Uganda and the DRC in the late 1990s, was formed by the coming together of former members of movements such as the Allied Force for the Liberation of Uganda (NALU), the Uganda Muslim Liberation Army, and the Tablighi Jamaat.
It is stated that thousands of civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in ADF attacks since 2014.
