According to a report by T24, police are treating the death of the 48-year-old woman, identified as Silvia Lopez Gayubas, as a murder committed by her adopted children. The mother's body was found in a garage near the family's home.
A regional spokesperson confirmed in a statement that the 15-year-old older child, whom the woman had adopted, has been arrested and is expected to be brought before a juvenile court.
The 13-year-old younger child, who is under the age of criminal responsibility in Spain and cannot be prosecuted, has not been officially arrested but is currently being held at a youth shelter.
It is understood that the woman lost her life in the vehicle after suffering a stab wound to the neck and injuries from severe blows.
According to local reports, the children's grandmother explained that the children called last night to say they had been "kidnapped." Investigators suspect that the children "fabricated" the kidnapping story before disconnecting their mobile phones.
