Lesotho is an independent state located within South Africa, yet those living in the country face transportation difficulties due to the region's geographical structure. However, Lesotho also faces social problems. The HIV/AIDS rate in the country is quite high; one in every five adults carries HIV. The United States has been supporting Lesotho's fight against HIV since 2006.

According to the UN World Health Organization, Lesotho has been recorded as the country with the highest suicide rate in the world. Unemployment, inadequate mental health services, and substance abuse have been cited as the primary causes of this issue.

Lesotho also holds an important place in the textile sector. Producing jeans for brands such as Levi's and Wrangler, the country is one of the largest exporters of apparel to the U.S. in Sub-Saharan Africa. With these characteristics, Lesotho draws attention for both its riches and its challenges.
