The perception of Latvia as a 'women's paradise' does not align with reality

The Baltic country of Latvia is attracting significant attention on the internet with posts themed around a "shortage of men." In particular, campaigns by some Indian tourism companies with slogans like "Latvia is calling you" and videos suggesting that women there struggle to find men present a picture where single men are supposedly at an advantage.

It is frequently claimed that Latvia is an attractive destination for single men, citing figures such as "insufficient male population" and "116 women for every 100 men."

According to some posts, the female population in the country is 15% higher than the male population, and extreme examples such as "husband for hire" services are highlighted. However, experts point out that this perception spread on social media does not reflect the truth.

According to statements from retirement experts and population data analysts, the fact that the female population in Latvia is higher than the male population is largely due to the elderly. In the population over 65, the ratio of women to men is significantly higher. The reason for this is that the average life expectancy of men is noticeably shorter than that of women.

In other words, although there is a surplus of women across Latvia as a whole, this difference does not apply to the youth and middle-aged population. On the contrary, among young people of marriageable and dating age, the number of men is higher than that of women. Experts state that the videos circulating on social media with the theme of "women who cannot find partners" do not reflect reality and emphasize that these stories spread online are mostly exaggerated for tourism and engagement purposes.

While the misinterpretation of demographic balances in Latvian society creates false expectations about the country, the truth is hidden in the statistical details.

Recently, such news has found its way into the Turkish media as well as the world press. Speaking to 12punto on the subject, Fuat Aydemir, President of the World Turkish Business Council (DTİK) Latvia, said that the claims do not reflect the truth.

Aydemir spoke as follows:

We were also very surprised when we first saw this news. In particular, the news about 1-hour husband rentals attracted great attention. However, this was purely a perception and content fabricated for circulation and clicks. Because when we investigated the matter, it was understood that advertisements placed for home repairs were distorted and made to look interesting. The female population in Latvia is very active. They are involved in business life and the education level of women is extremely good. The perception that some circles are trying to create, that 'there are no men left in Latvia,' does not reflect the truth and these are realities that can be easily verified from open sources."
