Pope Leo XIV, the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, drew attention by making his first official overseas visit to Turkey. The Pope's arrival in Ankara was recorded as the most-watched flight on the flight tracking platform Flightradar24.
Pope Leo XIV arrived in Ankara first as part of his visit to Turkey. The Airbus A320 aircraft belonging to ITA Airways, which carried the Pope, took off from Rome at 07:58 local time and landed at Ankara Esenboğa Airport at 12:30.
This flight quickly became the most tracked flight on Flightradar24.
On the first day of his visit, the Pope will visit Anıtkabir and then meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Pope Leo XIV, who is also scheduled to meet with the President of Religious Affairs Safi Arpaguş, will travel to Istanbul in the evening.
The Pope's Istanbul program will begin on Friday, November 28. The Pope, who will meet with bishops, priests, and other clergy at the Saint Esprit Catholic Church in Harbiye, will later visit the French Poorhouse. On the final day of his visit, he will go to the İznik district of Bursa to conduct a mass there.
