The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Iranian Narges Mohammadi for her work on women's rights.
Imprisoned Iranian women's rights advocate Narges Mohammadi has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.
In a statement made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, it was stated: "The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all."
WHO IS NARGES MOHAMMADI?
Narges Mohammadi is among Iran's leading human rights activists, campaigning for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty.
However, according to the rights organization Front Line Defenders, Mohammadi is currently serving a prison sentence of approximately 12 years in Tehran's Evin Prison. The charges brought against Mohammadi include spreading propaganda against the state.
Mohammadi also serves as the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, a non-governmental organization led by 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi.
On the other hand, Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the 122-year-old prize and the first woman to win it since Filipino journalist Maria Ressa won the award alongside Russian Dmitry Muratov in 2021.
