There are 100,000 people over the age of 100 in Japan

Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has released statistics regarding the country's growing elderly population. According to the data, the population of those over 100 has been rising for 54 consecutive years.

As of September, the population of people over 100 years old was recorded at 95,119. For the first time in the country's history, the population of 'centenarians' has surpassed 95,000. Compared to last year's data, the number has increased by 2,980. It was noted that 83,958 of those over 100 are women, while 11,161 are men.

In a statement regarding the matter, a Ministry spokesperson said, "We will make efforts to increase social welfare services, including medical and nursing care, so that the elderly can continue to live comfortably in their own communities."

Population data regarding "those who have lived for over a century" in Japan began to be recorded in 1963. Japan, which has a population of approximately 125 million, is known for its long life expectancy. The oldest living person, 116-year-old Itooka Tomiko, also lives in Japan.
