Three officers accused of sexual harassment convicted in Japan

A former female soldier's decision to share her story with the public broke a years-long taboo and led to many similar cases coming to light.

The Fukushima District Court in Japan has reached a new verdict in one of the country's most high-profile cases. Three officers who had previously been acquitted in the same case were retried and convicted on charges of sexual harassment.

Rina Gonoi, who was subjected to sexual harassment and humiliation by three officers in the Japan Self-Defense Forces in 2021, had initially seen the accused officers acquitted despite her filing a complaint.

Following this incident, Gonoi left the military and launched a petition campaign to combat sexual harassment, while also sharing her experiences on YouTube.

The fact that the incident gained international attention put pressure on the Ministry of Defense, forcing the ministry to launch a general investigation into sexual harassment.

The court found the officers guilty and handed down two-year suspended prison sentences.

Although she was subjected to threats and humiliation due to her statements, it is a major achievement that Gonoi's courage enabled more than 100 other cases of sexual harassment to be uncovered.

Given that sexual harassment remains a taboo in Japan, it is assumed that these figures are only the tip of the iceberg.

This is because conservative norms that cause victims to feel shame in closed communities turn into powerful weapons in the hands of perpetrators. The taboos that cause victims to remain silent provide perpetrators with a steady stream of new victims, fueled by the comfort of knowing they will never be prosecuted.
