Tourist arrivals halted on island of Capri due to water supply failure

Italy's tourist island of Capri has suspended tourist arrivals as a precautionary measure following a failure in the water supply network.

According to reports in the Italian press, the drinking water network on the island of Capri, a popular tourism destination in the Gulf of Naples known for its steep, cliff-lined coasts, has malfunctioned.

Due to the failure, Capri Mayor Paolo Falco issued an emergency decree halting tourist arrivals to the island. While only residents of Capri are permitted to enter, those who have already arrived have been asked to return to the mainland.

Ferries carrying tourists en route to the island were also instructed via radio to return to their ports of departure.

"HEALTH AND HYGIENE SITUATION ON THE ISLAND IS ON THE VERGE OF EXPLODING"

In a statement to the press, Falco pointed out that they host a large number of tourists every day during the tourism season, noting that it has become impossible to guarantee basic services without essential utilities.

Paolo Falco stated, "The health and hygiene situation on the island is on the verge of exploding. We have taken our precautions against this. We have activated the crisis desk and issued a restrictive decree. We are working together with the Mayor of Anacapri, the Prefecture, and all relevant institutions."

It was reported in the press that the Gori company, which is responsible for the network supplying water to the island, is working to fix the malfunction and restore the network to operation.

It was noted that water is being supplied to most of the island, and that most of those experiencing water outages are using the water in their storage tanks.

Covering an area of 10.4 square kilometers with a population of approximately 14 thousand, the island of Capri, one of Italy's favorite tourist destinations, hosts thousands of tourists every day throughout the summer tourism season.

Capri also stands out as one of the most popular destinations in the country for yacht tourism.
