TRNC Prime Minister Üstel's response to GASC on natural gas: 'We can provide you with water when you run dry'
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel responded in a written statement to the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus (GASC), which reacted to the natural gas memorandum signed with Turkey.
Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ünal Üstel has responded to the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus (GASC), which expressed its reaction to the "Memorandum of Understanding on Natural Gas Supply to the TRNC" signed between Turkey and the TRNC.
In a written statement, Üstel described the Greek side's discomfort with the agreement as an "expected situation." Stating that the embargoes and isolation against the Turkish Cypriot people continue, Üstel emphasized that the TRNC will continue to sign international agreements.
Expressing that the Greek leadership must accept the presence of Turkish Cypriots on the island, Üstel said that instead of complaining about the agreements made by the TRNC, the GASC could benefit from the opportunities coming to the island.
Pointing to the water delivered from Turkey to the TRNC in his statement, Üstel said, "They bring water by tankers and drink rusty water. They would be drinking clean Anamur water instead."
Arguing that the Turkish Cypriot people will be the "shining star" of the island in the fields of water, electricity, and natural gas, Üstel stated that no denial, threat, or smear campaign could hinder this process.
The TRNC Prime Minister noted that the decisions taken and signatures made by the legitimate representatives of the Turkish Cypriot people are neither illegal nor invalid. Üstel also stated that natural gas, electricity, and fiber optic infrastructure projects will be implemented with Turkey.
