Trump administration appeals to Supreme Court over $400 million White House ballroom

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has taken the legal process regarding the $400 million ballroom project under construction at the White House to the Supreme Court. The administration requested that the lower courts' decisions halting construction be overturned.

In the filing made on Friday, the administration requested that the path be cleared for the completion of the project. The filing, submitted under the signature of U.S. Deputy Solicitor General John Sauer, argued that the ballroom is critical for both "national security" and the "security of Trump and his family."

The filing stated that if the Supreme Court does not intervene, work on the project is scheduled to be halted on August 21. Thus, the future of the construction at the White House has become dependent on the decision to be made by the country's highest judicial authority.

A federal appeals court, in a decision on August 7, had ruled that the Trump administration could not build a ballroom at the White House without Congressional approval. The process had previously been taken to a local court, which had ordered the construction to be halted on April 16.

The Trump administration appealed the local court's decision, but the appeals court also issued a ruling limiting the project. With this latest filing, all eyes have turned to the Supreme Court regarding whether the $400 million project will continue.
