Trump and Putin hold talks
According to a statement from the Kremlin, the phone call between the two leaders took place in a constructive atmosphere. Trump and Putin discussed the issue of a ceasefire with Iran.
Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov stated regarding the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, "Russia is determined to provide all possible assistance to diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis and has presented various proposals aimed at resolving the disputes surrounding the Iranian nuclear program."
Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call. Ushakov stated that the leaders spoke for approximately 1.5 hours and that the contact took place in a friendly manner, adding, "Putin began his remarks with words of support regarding the assassination attempt against him (Trump) at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 25. Fortunately, Donald Trump and his wife escaped the attack unharmed. The President specifically condemned the attack, stating that he is against all forms of political assassination."
"The renewed use of force by the US and Israel would have extremely dire consequences"
Emphasizing that Putin and Trump discussed the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, Ushakov said, "Putin noted that Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran was the right one. This will provide an opportunity for negotiations and will generally help stabilize the situation. At the same time, the Russian President pointed out that if the US and Israel were to use force again, it would have inevitable and extremely dire consequences not only for Iran and its neighbors but for the entire international community, and that, of course, a possible ground operation would be an unacceptable and dangerous step."
"Russia has presented various proposals aimed at resolving the disputes surrounding the Iranian nuclear program"
Ushakov stated that it was also emphasized during the call that the Russian side is ready for all kinds of diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, adding, "Russia is determined to provide all possible assistance to diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis and has presented various proposals aimed at resolving the disputes surrounding the Iranian nuclear program. To this end, contacts will be actively maintained with Iranian representatives, leaders of Persian Gulf countries, Israel, and, of course, the American negotiating team. Trump expressed his assessments regarding the results of the final phase of military operations and his views on the difficult situation the Iranian administration is in."
"Trump believes that an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine is very close"
Emphasizing that the crisis in Ukraine was also discussed, Ushakov said, "Regarding the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, the US President noted the importance of ending the conflict quickly and said they were ready for this. His representatives will continue negotiations with both Moscow and Kyiv. Trump believes that an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine is very close. At Trump's request, President Putin provided an update on the latest developments on the front line. He said that Russian troops are holding strategic positions and repelling enemy attacks. He also stated that since the beginning of 2025, Russia has handed over more than 20 thousand bodies of soldiers to Ukraine. Both Putin and Trump expressed similar assessments regarding the stance of the Kyiv regime led by Zelensky, which pursues a policy of prolonging the conflict with the provocation and support of Europeans. The Russian leader directly stated that Kyiv is openly resorting to terrorist methods by attacking purely civilian targets on Russian soil."
Possibility of a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine
Yury Ushakov added that President Vladimir Putin also conveyed to Trump his thought that he could declare a ceasefire against Ukraine for Victory Day, which is celebrated in Russia on May 9 in the context of the World War II victory, stating, "Our President reaffirmed that the goals of the special military operation will be achieved in any case. However, he conveyed that he prefers for this to be concluded through negotiations under any circumstances. Trump spoke highly of Russia's previous Easter ceasefire. In response, Putin informed his American counterpart that he is ready to declare a ceasefire for the Victory Day celebrations as well. Trump said he supported this initiative."
Yury Ushakov said that the leaders also discussed Russian-American relations, adding, "In the section on Russian-American relations, both sides spoke of the great potential for mutually beneficial projects in the economy and energy sectors."
