Trump claimed genocide in South Africa, but footage turned out to be from Congo
It has emerged that the screenshots shown by US President Donald Trump to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House yesterday, regarding violence against white farmers in South Africa, were actually from a video filmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A new development has emerged in the "genocide" debate between US President Donald Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during their meeting at the White House yesterday. It has been revealed that the printouts of screenshots Trump showed to Ramaphosa regarding violence against white farmers in South Africa were actually from a video filmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During the meeting, Trump described the violence against white farmers in South Africa as "genocide," showed the printed screenshots to the cameras, and said, "These are all white farmers being buried."
It was stated that the footage, filmed by Reuters reporter Djaffar Al Katanty and published on February 3, was recorded in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and shows humanitarian aid workers carrying body bags. It was reported that the footage was from a mass funeral held following clashes with the M23 rebel group.
"I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO KNOW WHERE IT WAS FILMED"
Following the footage he presented regarding violence against white farmers in South Africa, Trump had said, "White farmers are being removed from their land and killed. If this is genocide, we should take these people into our country." Referring to US billionaire Elon Musk, Trump said, "Elon is from South Africa. He knows very well what is happening."
Ramaphosa stated that he had not seen the images before and said, "I would have liked to know where these videos were filmed before they were shown to me." Ramaphosa added, "What is happening in South Africa is not a race-based genocide, but a widespread crime problem. The victims are not just white people, but mostly black people."
