Trump claims rival Harris 'is not Black'

Trump spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists convention held in Chicago.

Evaluating the ethnic background of his likely opponent in the 2024 presidential election, Democrat Harris, Trump said, "She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black."

Trump added, "I've known her a long time, indirectly, not directly very much."

Stating that Harris "happened to turn Black," Trump used the expression, "So I don't know, is she Indian or is she Black?"

There was a reaction from the White House to Trump questioning Harris's ethnic identity.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated at the daily press briefing that she found Trump's remarks "repulsive and insulting."
