Trump draws closer to the number of delegates needed for the presidency: The gap between the two candidates is widening

Vote counting continues following the presidential elections in the US. According to the latest results, Republican candidate Donald Trump has secured 201 delegates, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris remains at 99 delegates.

According to unofficial results published by the Associated Press (AP), Trump finished the race in Texas in the lead.

Trump has won 40 delegates in Texas.

Meanwhile, results from the states of New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana have also been announced.

While Democratic candidate Kamala Harris emerged victorious in New York state, Trump won the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana.

Harris won 28 delegates in New York, while Trump added 17 delegates to his tally in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana.

HOW IS THE US PRESIDENT ELECTED?

In US presidential elections, voters primarily cast their ballots for the delegates of the party they support.

In this system, called the 'Electoral College,' a total of 538 delegates are determined, distributed among each state with different weights.

The candidate who reaches one more than half of this number, which is 270 delegates, earns the right to become president.
