Trump had imposed additional tariffs: Canada has launched a trade war against the US

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in retaliation for the additional customs duties imposed by the US, announced that a 25 percent tariff will be applied to imports from the US valued at 155 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 107 billion US dollars). 

In a press conference, Trudeau stated that the new tariffs will take effect on Tuesday for products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars, and within 21 days for the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars worth of goods. It was stated that products such as alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, vegetables, perfumes, clothing, furniture, sports equipment, and plastics will be included in the tax scope. 

The Canadian Prime Minister emphasized that this step would create difficulties for Canadians but would also have serious consequences in the US. Trudeau stated the following:

'These tariffs could put American car factories and other manufacturing facilities at risk. Furthermore, grocery prices and gasoline costs will increase.'

US President Donald Trump had previously communicated that he would impose additional tariffs on Canada, as well as Mexico, Brazil, China, and the EU trade bloc. 

'THE US IS VIOLATING AGREEMENTS'

Trudeau also argued that the customs duties imposed by the US on Canada violate the free trade agreement between the two countries. Stating that Canada is a vital partner for the US in terms of critical minerals, energy resources, and natural resources, Trudeau noted the following:

"The US can initiate a new golden age by partnering with Canada."

Furthermore, addressing the fentanyl issue in the US, Trudeau added that less than 1 percent of illegal crossings of this substance occur through Canada. Canada stated that it will continue to increase border security but that the current situation is already secure. 

Canada announced that it is also evaluating non-tariff measures in response to the US tariffs.
