Trump: I thought Meloni was brave
US President Donald Trump criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for not supporting the US regarding its attacks on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, stating, "I was shocked by her behavior. I thought she was a brave person, but I was wrong."
US President Donald Trump made statements to the Italian press. In his remarks, Trump directed harsh criticism toward Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Questioning the Italian government's energy and international security policies, Trump argued that Italy is not assuming the necessary role in terms of global balance.
"If Iran found the opportunity, it would blow up Italy in two minutes"
Reacting to Meloni's lack of support for the attacks on Iran, Trump said, "Do the Italian people tolerate your Prime Minister not helping us at all with oil supplies? Do people tolerate this? I don't think they do. I was shocked by her behavior. I thought she was a brave person, but I was wrong. She doesn't want to help us with NATO, she doesn't want to help us get rid of nuclear weapons," adding, "Meloni says Italy doesn't want to get involved in this. Even though Italy gets its oil from there, even though America is very important for Italy. She thinks Italy shouldn't get involved in this. She thinks America should handle this for her. If Iran found the opportunity, it would blow up Italy in two minutes."
"She didn't let people come and ruin her country like Italy did"
Stating that Italy is not handling the migration issue decisively and that this will have direct consequences on the country's stability, Trump added that he has not spoken with Meloni for a long time. Touching upon the elections in Hungary, Trump said, "Viktor Orban was my friend, he was a good man. He did a good job on migration. He didn't let people come and ruin his country like Italy did."
Expressing that Europe is paying the price for the wrong policies it has pursued regarding energy, Trump argued that Europe is overly dependent on the US for the security of strategic routes. In this context, Trump touched upon the Strait of Hormuz and criticized Europe for not supporting the US regarding the security of the strait.
Targeting the spiritual leader of Catholics, Pope Leo XIV, once again, Trump reacted to the Pope's anti-war rhetoric, saying, "He doesn't understand what is happening in Iran and he shouldn't talk about war."
Also targeting NATO, Trump reminded that NATO is not helping the US regarding Iran, stating, "I wanted them to send whatever they wanted to send, but they don't want to. Because NATO is a paper tiger."
