Trump signs executive order on reciprocal tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order regarding a plan to impose customs duties on countries based on the principle of reciprocity. Stating that he decided to implement reciprocal tariffs to ensure fairness in trade, Trump said, "Whatever countries impose on the U.S., we will impose the same."
Trump made the statement after signing the order, which instructs the development of a comprehensive plan against non-reciprocal arrangements in U.S. trade relations.
Stating that he decided to implement reciprocal tariffs to ensure fairness in trade, Trump said, "Whatever countries impose on the U.S., we will impose the same."
Trump expressed that they would address countries using a VAT system, arguing that this system is much more "punitive" than a tariff. President Trump stated, "The VAT will be considered a tariff."
Noting that subsidies provided by countries will also be examined, Trump said that regulations will also be made for non-monetary tariffs.
