Trump signs executive order to mitigate impact of automotive tariffs
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at mitigating the impact of automotive tariffs.
The executive order, shared by the White House, states that a new regulation has been introduced to prevent the application of multiple customs duties on the same import item.
The decree notes that tariffs imposed on automobiles and automotive parts, aluminum and steel imports, and measures to curb the flow of illegal drugs across the northern and southern borders are addressed within this scope.
The order, which establishes the procedure for determining which tariff will apply in cases where multiple tariffs are imposed on the same imported product, records that a product subject to automotive tariffs will be exempt from other tariffs.
Meanwhile, a US Department of Commerce official stated that the 25 percent tariff on automotive parts, which will take effect on May 3, will be implemented, but that vehicles completed in the US may receive a partial reduction on these taxes.
US President Trump, in a statement to the press while leaving the White House, indicated that they want to assist automotive manufacturers during the transition period.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also emphasized during a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday morning that Trump has been holding talks with both domestic and foreign automakers and is determined to bring automotive production back to the US.
Bessent stated, "Therefore, we want to give automakers a transition period to do this quickly and efficiently, and to create as many jobs as possible."
US President Trump had signed the executive order on March 26 to impose a 25 percent customs duty on imported automobiles, light commercial vehicles, and essential automotive parts.
