Trump supports idea of renaming New Mexico to 'New America'

US President Donald Trump has made posts supporting the idea of renaming the state of New Mexico to 'New America'. Trump's move comes at a time when trade negotiations between the US and Mexico are ongoing.

Sharing various map images of the US on his social media account, Trump labeled the region where New Mexico is located as 'New America'. Trump stated that he had received suggestions to change the state's name and that he liked the idea.

Potentially incredible, much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of this state. Wow, I love it.

— Donald Trump

The US federal government does not have the authority to change the name of a state. Therefore, such a change would require processes to be carried out at the state level.

New Mexico Governor, Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham, responded to Trump on her social media account. Grisham stated, "New Mexico's name is not up for debate; this name was ours even before the US existed."

Trump had previously renamed Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' after failing to reach an agreement in trade negotiations with Canada.
