Mexico took action after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25 percent additional customs duty on imports from Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the new customs duty during a phone call.

In a statement following the call, Sheinbaum stated that they would deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. border to combat drug trafficking, adding that she had proposed suspending the customs duty during the conversation and that Trump had accepted.

Trump, for his part, announced that he would suspend the new customs duties on Mexico for one month, noting that the two countries would conduct further negotiations during this period.

TRADE WARS

Yesterday, Trump signed an executive order to impose a 25 percent additional customs duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10 percent additional customs duty on imports from China.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a press conference held hours after Trump signed the customs duty executive orders, announced that Canada would impose customs duties on imports from the U.S. in retaliation for Trump's tariffs.

Noting that a 25 percent customs duty would be applied to 155 billion Canadian dollars' worth of imports from the U.S., Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the customs duty on 30 billion Canadian dollars' worth of products would take effect tomorrow, and the duty on the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars' worth of products would take effect in 21 days.

China, which condemned the Trump administration's tax decision, stated that it would challenge the U.S. at the World Trade Organization and take "countermeasures" against the decision.
