Trump to pay damages
Former US President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay 83 million dollars in damages in the ongoing "E. Jean Carroll" rape and defamation trial in New York.
In the long-running case in New York, the jury announced its verdict regarding Trump today.
The jury ordered Trump to pay a total of 83.3 million dollars in damages, citing the damage the former US President caused to the reputation of writer Carroll.
Upon learning of the verdict, Carroll celebrated by hugging her lawyer, while Trump expressed his initial reaction on his account on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, "Absolutely ridiculous. I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party. This is not America."
RAPE AND DEFAMATION
80-year-old magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll had stated that Trump raped her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in the spring of 1996, while Trump had denied the allegations.
Trump was found liable by a jury in May 2023 following a two-week trial in the "rape and defamation" lawsuit filed by Carroll.
The jury had ruled that Trump should pay a total of 5 million dollars in damages to Carroll, including 2 million dollars for sexual abuse and battery, and 3 million dollars for defamation.
Following her first legal victory, Carroll filed a second "damages" lawsuit for 10 million dollars in addition to the 5 million dollars in damages she won against Trump, and on September 6, 2023, the judge found Trump liable again in the case.
In the "damages" trial that began in New York on January 16, the 9-member jury was tasked solely with deciding the amount of damages Trump would pay.
