Trump's tax retaliation against Canada

The trade war between the US and Canada is heating up. In retaliation for Canada's 25 percent tax on electricity exported from the province of Ontario to the US, US President Donald Trump has doubled the tariffs on all steel and aluminum products imported from Canada, raising them to the 50 percent band.

Stating that the new tax in question will go into effect tomorrow, Trump said, "Canada must immediately remove this Anti-American Farmer Tariff of between 250 percent and 390 percent that it applies to US dairy products. These tariffs have long been seen as a scandal. Furthermore, I will declare a national emergency regarding electricity in the threatened region."

Trump also threatened to "significantly increase" customs duties on cars entering the US on April 2 if other "horrendous customs duties" long applied by Canada are not reduced in the same manner.
