Turkey to establish a 'Polar Research Base' in Antarctica: Ministry provides a date

Details regarding the research base planned to be established in Antarctica were shared in the 2030 strategy document prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Technology. The design and environmental impact assessment report for the base have received approval on international platforms.

The planned Polar Research Base will be equipped with renewable energy systems. The facility, which is aimed to be built quickly thanks to its modular structure, will have a capacity of 50 people. The structure, which will consist of three main sections, will host scientific studies.

Within the scope of polar studies that began in 2017 under the auspices of the Presidency, the 10th national expedition is projected to be carried out in the 2025-2026 period. These expeditions aim to increase Turkey's effectiveness in the international scientific community.

The Ministry is moving toward a new structure to conduct polar research systematically. The Polar Regions Coordination Board will undertake the task of monitoring research activities and determining strategies.

The base project, which was presented to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, was designed in accordance with environmental protection standards. Turkish scientists will collect data on climate change and polar ecosystems through studies to be conducted on the white continent.
