Turkey's Chargé d'Affaires in Damascus Köroğlu: We will meet with both the prime minister and Ahmed al-Shara

Turkey has taken action for those believed to be trapped in Sednaya Prison, known as a center for torture under the Assad regime in Syria. AFAD has begun search operations in the area and at the prison with 43 vehicles and 120 personnel. AFAD President Okay Memiş and Turkey's Chargé d'Affaires in Damascus Burhan Köroğlu conducted inspections at Sednaya Prison.

Speaking to members of the press afterward, Turkey's Chargé d'Affaires in Damascus Burhan Köroğlu said, “It is a very meaningful visit and they will be carrying out meaningful activities. The history of the prison is well-known. Very major crimes were committed. Some have been identified, some have not. The research that AFAD will conduct with its own equipment is important.

Not just the prison, but the area and surroundings of the prison will be searched with comprehensive equipment. We are already following the results as the whole world. Turkey has long been working on how those who committed these war crimes will be punished through legal channels, but identification is necessary.

In this framework, AFAD arrived in a very short time. Not just for this incident, but Turkey will be here with all its institutions regarding the aid and support that Syria needs in many areas from now on. As the embassy, we will contribute to Syria's reconstruction and the development of relations,” he stated.

"WE HAVE BEGUN WORKING WITH THE LEGITIMATE INTERIM GOVERNMENT"

Explaining that they have held meetings with the interim Syrian government, Köroğlu said, “We met with the Syrian Foreign Relations Representative yesterday.

Tomorrow, we will meet with both the prime minister and opposition leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani (Ahmed al-Shara). Of course, we will meet because we will be working with them. As you know, this is an interim government.

They have statements regarding completing constitutional work in the short term, meeting with their counterparts, and starting the democratic process in this government. In that framework, we will also try to support them during this process. Our relations have begun, but of course, we want to carry these out calmly.

The greatest need is the country's stability and especially the cessation of foreign attacks. There is no internal conflict in this region. There is also no need for any foreign power to intervene here. In this framework, we have begun working with the current legitimate interim government,” he said.
