Turkish man whose asylum application was rejected in Austria deported while at the wedding altar

In Austria's Lower Austria state, in the town of Vösendorf, a 27-year-old Turkish citizen whose asylum application was rejected, Hamza, and his 40-year-old German fiancée Gundula's wedding on January 13 was raided and interrupted by the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum.

DETAINED AT THE WEDDING ALTAR

The couple, whose marriage had not yet been solemnized, were shocked to see 12 officials from the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum standing before them. The officials detained Hamza at the wedding altar to begin deportation proceedings, while Gundula could not hold back her tears at what was happening.

Guests who requested that Hamza be detained after the wedding ceremony received a negative response. When Gundula reacted to the situation, stating that he had the right to marry, an official replied, "True, but not today. The detention will take place now."

DEPORTED

Officials stated that Hamza was required to have left Austria 10 days ago and that he had committed an offense by remaining in Austria illegally.

Hamza's lawyer, Gregor Klammer, stated that his client, who was detained at the wedding altar, would be sent to Turkey and that he is a draft evader.
