Turkish police officer who contracted malaria in Ghana passes away
Police officer Fatma Akın Akıllı (34), who contracted malaria while serving in Ghana, has passed away in Ankara, where she was receiving treatment.
Fatma Akın Akıllı, who was initially assigned to the International Relations Branch of the Cyber Crimes Department in Lyon, France, was later sent to Ghana on a temporary assignment.
HAD BEEN UNDER TREATMENT FOR 19 DAYS
Akıllı contracted malaria while serving in Ghana. Her condition worsened, and she was flown to Ankara. Akıllı, who had been receiving treatment at Ankara City Hospital for 19 days, passed away yesterday.
LAID TO REST IN HER HOMETOWN OF KARABÜK
The funeral for police officer Akıllı was held today in the Safranbolu district of her hometown, Karabük. The ceremony was attended by Karabük Governor Mustafa Yavuz, members of parliament Cem Şahin and Ali Keskinkılıç, Interpol President Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock, Head of the Foreign Relations Department of the General Directorate of Security Gökhan Demirtola, Head of the Social Services and Health Department Asım Bulat, Head of the Cyber Crimes Department Faruk Aydın, as well as institution directors and citizens.

Fatma Akın Akıllı was laid to rest in the Tokatlı Family Cemetery following the funeral prayer held at the Safranbolu Central Mosque. Meanwhile, it was learned that an investigation has been initiated to determine whether Akıllı qualifies for martyr status.
