Two Greek oil tankers attacked in the Strait of Hormuz
As tensions between Iran and the US intensify, two Greek oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz using Omani territorial waters have been attacked.
The Greek tanker company Dynacom announced that the crews of the two ships that were attacked have been brought ashore by Omani authorities and that they are in close contact with all regional authorities.
Dynacom stated that the Malta-flagged Panamax-class tanker Kavomaleas, one of the two ships, was struck by two projectiles, which caused a fire in the engine room and forced them to evacuate the ship.
In a statement released by the company, it was said, "Following the activation of the fire suppression system on board, the captain decided to evacuate the ship."
In another statement, it was announced that the Liberia-flagged Acheloos, a large crude oil tanker with a capacity to carry 2 million barrels of oil, was also struck by projectiles. The company's statement noted that the crews of both ships are safe.
The Greek maritime security company Marisks reported that the Acheloos and Kavomaleas were struck simultaneously and that both were passing through the strait using the southern corridor established with US support.
IRAN: TWO SHIPS EXPLODED
The official Iranian news agency IRNA reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early this morning that two oil tankers attempting to pass through Omani territorial waters had "exploded" in the south of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Revolutionary Guards claimed that the ships had struck mines in the waterway and warned that as long as US attacks continue, the region will not be safe and all ships carrying fertilizer, oil, or natural gas will be under threat.
The Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the "two tankers," which were acting under "US coercion and provocation" and "committing violations," were attempting to enter and exit via a route south of the strait described as an "unsafe and accident-prone route," and subsequently "had to stop after exploding."
