UK announces construction of 6 new warships
UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that they will build 6 new warships for the Royal Marines.
Minister Grant Shapps, speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today program, stated that these new vessels, known as Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS), will be built in the UK and will help strengthen the amphibious special operations commando force for the wars of the future.
Pointing out that the construction of these ships is possible because the UK has significantly increased its defense spending, Shapps said this represents a new golden age for British shipbuilding.
A statement from the UK Ministry of Defence also noted that the Royal Navy's shipbuilding program will be increased to 28 ships and submarines for a more secure future, and that 6 of these vessels will be warships.
The British government had announced in 2022 that it would build new ships for the Royal Marines.
DEFENSE SPENDING INCREASED
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on April 23 that his country would increase its defense spending to 2.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.
Sunak had emphasized that more steps must be taken now to deter growing threats.
