UK plans to offer asylum seekers money to move to Rwanda

A system is already in place in the country where individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected receive money to return to their home countries voluntarily.

The new policy targets individuals who cannot return to their home countries.

The British government has also been trying for some time to implement another initiative to hold asylum seekers who arrive in the country illegally in Rwanda while their applications are being processed. This initiative requires approval from Parliament.

A Home Office spokesperson stated, “Last year, 19,000 people left the country voluntarily, which shows the importance we place on tackling illegal migration,” and added:

“We are working on a scheme for people who have no right to be in our country to go to Rwanda voluntarily. Rwanda is willing to offer people who have no right to be in the UK the chance to build a new life.”

According to the plan, those whose asylum applications have been rejected will have the right to work in Rwanda, unlike their status in the UK, and will also receive additional support from Rwanda.

Commenting on the issue, Stephen Kinnock, a senior politician responsible for immigration policies in the main opposition Labour Party, said, “When the government saw that the Rwanda plan had no chance of success, they decided to try paying people to leave.”

Stating that Rwanda “has the capacity to accept very few people,” Kinnock continued:

“The government must explain how many people they plan to send this way and how much this is expected to cost. There is so much confusion about the Rwanda plan that it is hard not to agree with those who do not find this plan credible.”
