UK Prime Minister Starmer: I am fed up with energy bills constantly fluctuating due to Putin or Trump's actions around the world

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made statements to the British press regarding global developments and their consequences. Holding Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump responsible for the rise in energy prices, Starmer said, "I am fed up with energy bills for families and businesses across the country constantly fluctuating due to Putin or Trump's actions around the world. I do not accept being told to families and businesses that 'We have to be in the international market, we have to put up with this'."

Stating that the conflict between the US and Israel with Iran has rapidly increased energy prices in the UK, Starmer noted that the UK is at the center of the coalition established for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Starmer said that in the early days of the war, he severed ties with Trump by refusing to grant the US permission to use British bases for offensive purposes.

"These are not words I would ever use"

Regarding Trump's threat toward Iran that "Tonight an entire civilization will be wiped out and will never come back," Starmer said, "Let me be very clear, these are not words I would ever use. Because I approach this issue with British values and principles. As the UK, we have our own principles and values, and these will guide us in everything we do."

"My decisions are based on British national interests"

Stating that he has been closely monitoring the situation since the war began in the Middle East, Starmer said, "We have been monitoring the situation from the very beginning. I am very clear about what agreements are made and how the bases will be used. This is an important matter of principle because if we are going to deploy our soldiers, there must be a legal basis for it. We must clarify where we stand as a country. I am the Prime Minister of the UK and I make my decisions based on British national interests. Despite the noise, pressure, and rhetoric, this has always been my focus."

Support for a ceasefire in Lebanon

Addressing Israel's attacks on Lebanon, Starmer said, "It is difficult to say there is a violation when we do not have access to all the details of the ceasefire. However, let me be really clear on this. They are wrong. This should not happen. This must stop. The question is not whether this is technically a breach of the agreement. The question is actually a matter of principle."

"We can no longer aim to return to normal"

Drawing attention to the economic effects of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, Starmer said, "I think the response to the 2008 global financial crisis and the Covid-19 shock was wrong. Everyone tried to return to normal quickly and did not fundamentally change anything. We can no longer aim to return to normal. We must change this. We must act strongly in many important areas."

Stating that the consequences of the war will be felt for a long time and that the British people cannot be completely protected from this, Starmer emphasized that they aim to develop closer relations with the European Union to remove obstacles to economic growth.
