UK Prime Minister Sunak makes statement on irregular migration

Defending the migration agreements they made with Rwanda and the one Italy signed with Albania, Sunak said, "If migrants come to Italy or the UK illegally, they will not be allowed to stay; this must be clear."

Recalling the agreement signed between the Rome and Tirana administrations on November 6, which envisions Italy establishing 2 irregular migration centers on Albanian territory, as well as their own migration agreement with Rwanda, Sunak said, "Giorgia signed a deal with Albania, and we made a deal with Rwanda. We want to disrupt the business of these criminal gangs."

Stating that they need to hold discussions on this issue and establish a framework for political asylum, Sunak said, "There is a fundamental and important point regarding sovereignty. It is not criminal gangs, but we who must decide who comes to our countries.

Because if we cannot solve this problem today, the boats will continue to arrive. We must ensure that deterrence works. If migrants come to Italy or the UK illegally, they will not be allowed to stay; this must be clear."

Thanking Meloni for her leadership on this issue in the international arena, Sunak stated, "We must do whatever it takes to stop the boats and provide more security for our citizens. As conservative leaders, this is our fight."

Referring to former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Sunak noted the following:

"Thatcher understood that ideas only matter if they can be implemented. Even when the struggle was difficult, she never backed down. Today, when it comes to illegal migration, we must apply Thatcher's radicalism. Our opponents bury their heads in the sand and want the problem to solve itself, but that is not how it happens. Go to Lampedusa, where migrants arrived this year. This is no longer sustainable, and it is also immoral."

Touching upon the importance of helping Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war during his speech, the UK Prime Minister stated that Italy's support on this issue is important, saying, "We are Atlanticists, we are conservatives, we support NATO, and we oppose Russia's aggression against Ukraine. We must continue to give Kyiv what it needs to finish the job."

Following his speech, Sunak greeted the attendees of the event alongside Meloni.
