UK Prime Minister Sunak's close protection officer detained

UK investigations continue into those who placed bets regarding the election date.

A police officer serving on UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's close protection team has been detained on allegations of placing bets on the date of the general election before it was announced.

The London Metropolitan Police announced that an investigation has been launched into the officer, who is suspected of misconduct in public office by betting on the timing of the election, and that the officer has been detained.

The Metropolitan Police stated that the Gambling Commission contacted them to report that they were investigating allegations that an officer from the specialist unit responsible for protecting members of the Royal family and government officials had placed bets on the election date.

Officers serving in the Metropolitan Police's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command are, by the nature of their duties, in very close proximity to Prime Minister Sunak and often share the same vehicle as the prime minister.

SUNAK'S SPECIAL ADVISER HAD ALSO PLACED BETS

The news of the police officer's detention comes one week after it was revealed that one of Prime Minister Sunak's special advisers, Craig Williams, had placed bets on the election date.

It was revealed that Williams, who is a Conservative Party parliamentary candidate for the general election to be held on July 4, had placed a 100-pound bet on the election date three days before Prime Minister Sunak announced it.

UK Prime Minister Sunak announced in a statement on May 22 that the date for the general election would be July 4.
